5.0 out of 5 stars Great investment for small home theater!, August 2, 2012

Let me start off this review by mentioning that I started with the Marantz nr-1402 receiver, and did not have a good experience with it. The nr-1402 has five HDMI inputs, but only three of them are assignable. You have to scroll through the inputs to access the last two. Sound was really good, but controls were quirky. Then I exchanged that unit for the nr-1403, which is the updated model for 2012. The 1403 is a great machine! Great sound, features that are intuitive, and some pretty solid construction. I used it for about a month before deciding the difference in price would be worth it to get 7.1 capability, networking, and most importantly, upscaling. All of my sources are HD, and all of them upscale, except for cable. The best I get from the native source is 1080i. Not a big deal, but the cable boxes, and TV's that are out there are not the greatest for scaling to 1080p. What was really surprising though, was that I am getting way more out of this receiver than I ever expected... Read more

I was really excited to get this receiver as it had all the features I needed plus a super low profile so I didn't have to replace my TV stand. Size wise its perfect. Operationally this thing is really great at first but I ran into 3 things that I couldn't live with for the money.

1. The Standby pass through did not work with my cable box. I tried every possible combination of settings with the same result every time. when i turned on the TV and Cable box i would get a short flash of video, then a short flash of video with sound, then nothing and eventually my TV would say "No Signal, check cable...."
2. The video quality was awful while the Up Convert settings were enable. These allowed for overlaid menus instead of interrupting the video to show the menus. A pretty nice feature. Since I didn't really need that I turned it off in the hopes that it let the video pass without hindering it. This only marginally improved the video quality. there were still weird sync... Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice Slim Line Receiver, June 28, 2012

This was a nice slim line unit by Marantz but I had to return it because it was interfering with my wireless network and it wasn't even hard wired. If you want a unit that doesn't have all the extra stuff you really don't need than go and get yourself a NAD, the best sounding receiver out there and very user friendly.
