5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent AVR for both music and movies, January 15, 2011
This review is from: Marantz SR5005 Audio Video Receiver (Black) (Electronics)
I recently decided to upgrade my home theater setup, and purchased a Samsung 63" Samsung PN63C8000 63-Inch 1080p 3D Plasma HDTV, Black and wanted a home theater to match. Previously, I had just used my TV speakers (granted, my old Sony XBR had far better speakers than most TVs, but still far short of a dedicated setup). I wouldn't describe myself as an audiophile, but I can appreciate good sound ... it's just that my interest lies more in music and film than in the actual audio/video equipment. My media room is 15'x20', and I wanted a system that would be as good for music as for movies.

Because of my room layout, I decided I was limited to a 5.1 system. I ordered this Marantz SR5005 receiver along with a 5.1 speaker system from Aperion Audio, going their 5T Hybrid HD system. These particular Aperion speakers are fairly... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars "Because Music Matters", June 16, 2011
This review is from: Marantz SR5005 Audio Video Receiver (Black) (Electronics)
I Purchased the SR5005 to replace a recently deceased 10 year old THX certified receiver, powering Klipsch Reference series speakers, and having several internet-connected devices feeding it content - Xbox360, Mvix Ultio Pro Media Center, and a Home Theater PC.

Set up was a breeze. I had never used any of the automatic configuration and set up tools before, so i can't compare it against the competition, but it certainly cut the set up time drastically, although it did take me quite some tinkering to find out how to modify the EQ, etc. after its automatically set. The EQ is quite robust and does let you fully customize each speaker individually if you so wish, although there do not seem to be any DSP settings at all.

I tested out all sorts of music from my HTPC and was pleased with everything i heard. Everything... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Money Can Buy!, February 15, 2011
This review is from: Marantz SR5005 Audio Video Receiver (Black) (Electronics)
Absolutely love it. Looks very stylish in my room, it brings out the raw quality of your speakers (I had a garbage budget Pioneer receiver and never looking back) and I noticed a night and day difference. I went to Best Buy and actually bought it there because it was on sale, but I got to listen to Michael Buble in concert using the top-of-the-line Denon, Pioneer, and this one. Even the $2000 Denon couldn't compare to this unit and that is my honest opinion. I never in my life heard of this company, but I did some major searching for the best AV Receiver brands and audiophiles turned me on to them. I am very glad I took the time to research because it was well worth the purchase. Very high quality, incredible sound, very easy setup and a good selection of settings to find the best sound for your room or the type of music/movies/games you are listening to. A couple of things that will interest you. One of them is that the setup mic that comes with it is very nice for auto... Read more

Definitive Technology ProCinema 400BK 5.1 Speaker System (Black, 6 Pieces) best buy

Product Description

ProCinema 400 Subwoofer / Satellite System - Easy To Place, Easy to Enjoy
The ProCinema 400 System is a 6-piece home theater system, incorporating four identical, easy to place satellite speakers for front and surround channels, a matching center channel loudspeaker, and a robust powered subwoofer. But don't let its small size and affordable price fool you-the ProCinema 400 is a remarkably sophisticated product with huge sound. The system's components incorporate many of the same technologies as Definitive's top-of-the-line models, including drivers with butyl rubber surrounds, pure aluminum dome tweeters, planar pressure coupled mid/bass radiators, and a 150-Watt powered subwoofer. The result is home theater sound quality that will astound your friends and family when they hear your system.

Superior Components and Bass Radiator Technology Deliver Better Sound
How does the ProCinema 400 system sound so good, despite its small size and modest price? One key factor is the performance of the small satellite speakers. Most small satellites lack warmth and body, sounding "thin" and reedy when vocal music is played. The ProCinema 400 satellites have mid-bass drivers featuring butyl rubber surrounds, for long excursion without distortion. Butyl rubber surrounds cancel excessive energy within the driver, and last for years.

The driver is pressure-coupled to a 3 ½ inch lower midrange radiator, which is mounted at the top of the satellite cabinet. The lower midrange radiator extends the bass response of the driver, to smoothly meet the subwoofer's upper-end response. You get rich, full sound from easy to place cabinets.

Center channel excellence
The center channel speaker is the most important speaker in a home theater setup. As much as 75% of a movie's soundtrack is played by the center channel speaker, including the crucial dialog and mid-screen special effects.

  • Big speaker sound from small, easily placed satellite and center channel speakers
  • Pure aluminum tweeters daliver clear, sweet high frequency sounds
  • 150 watt powered subwoofer, with down-firing, long-throw, 8" driver and floor-coupled reinforced port, produces rich, satisfying bass from a small cabinet

5.0 out of 5 stars I continue to be pleasantly surprised, November 9, 2011

This review is from: Marantz NR1402 AV Receiver (Electronics)
I've stayed away from home theatre for most of my life. For audio, I've invested in reasonably high-end specialized gear, so have become cautious about mass-produced consumer electronics. I mean, how good can this thing be if it only costs $400?

The answer: Very.

Most importantly, it sounds great. I'm using this with Orb Audio speakers and a Rel 218 subwoofer. The Orbs are inexpensive good speakers. The sub is something audio-geeks like. This combination sounds exceptional.

Setup is straightforward. I've only done it manually, but I will probably experiment with the automated setup at some point. The interface is straightforward and the instructions are clear. There are a lot of useful features in this box, but yet it is free of the bloat that one sees in the huge monster-sized hulking testosterone-overdose receivers on display in places like bestbuy. If you want elegance and comparative simplicity, without sacrificing sound quality, this is... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Solves the battle between good looks and good sound!, February 13, 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase( What's this?)
This review is from: Marantz NR1402 AV Receiver (Electronics)
I'm an audiophile, so I prioritize audio quality over almost everything else. Unfortunately, the Mrs. doesn't share this view, so when I decided it was about time we got a good audio system for the living room, she absolutely refused to have a normal-sized A/V receiver in the cabinet space. To be fair to her, it probably wouldn't have fit anyways, as cabinet space was limited. So I went searching for an A/V receiver with a small footprint that would still perform as good as its bigger counterparts.

This fit the bill perfectly. I have a Denon 1912 for the basement, and besides internet music streaming and Airplay, I haven't noticed much difference between the two (the Denon is considered to be the best A/V receiver out there at the time of this review). I'm using this with an Energy RC-Micro 5.1 speaker system (again, it had to be visually appealing for the Mrs.), and this makes them shine. It had all the options I needed, including channel level adjustment, crossover... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Like it better than I thought I would, December 28, 2011
This review is from: Marantz NR1402 AV Receiver (Electronics)
Setup was fairly easy. Using it in 2.1 channel only, hooked up to my computer via digital. Only thing was setup slightly off from manual. Was listed you could run mains "full range" but in reality you had to pick a high pass of 40hz or higher. Maybe it was a firmware update since it was printed? Sound quality is great.
Update: Played around with it a little. Hooked it up to computer via HDMI, works pretty cool since it has pass through. No need to turn it on if you don't need or want sound.
Push OSD on the remote it gives you a brief summary of everything then goes away in a few seconds. All things are just laid over top of desktop. It has a screen saver that goes all black in 30sec default, good if computer is off. When adjusting anything it pops up just as OSD does.
