5.0 out of 5 stars Great investment for small home theater!, August 2, 2012

This review is from: Marantz NR1603 Slim Line AV Receiver (Electronics)
Let me start off this review by mentioning that I started with the Marantz nr-1402 receiver, and did not have a good experience with it. The nr-1402 has five HDMI inputs, but only three of them are assignable. You have to scroll through the inputs to access the last two. Sound was really good, but controls were quirky. Then I exchanged that unit for the nr-1403, which is the updated model for 2012. The 1403 is a great machine! Great sound, features that are intuitive, and some pretty solid construction. I used it for about a month before deciding the difference in price would be worth it to get 7.1 capability, networking, and most importantly, upscaling. All of my sources are HD, and all of them upscale, except for cable. The best I get from the native source is 1080i. Not a big deal, but the cable boxes, and TV's that are out there are not the greatest for scaling to 1080p. What was really surprising though, was that I am getting way more out of this receiver than I ever expected... Read more

3.0 out of 5 stars Very disappointing for my needs, August 19, 2012

I was really excited to get this receiver as it had all the features I needed plus a super low profile so I didn't have to replace my TV stand. Size wise its perfect. Operationally this thing is really great at first but I ran into 3 things that I couldn't live with for the money.

1. The Standby pass through did not work with my cable box. I tried every possible combination of settings with the same result every time. when i turned on the TV and Cable box i would get a short flash of video, then a short flash of video with sound, then nothing and eventually my TV would say "No Signal, check cable...."
2. The video quality was awful while the Up Convert settings were enable. These allowed for overlaid menus instead of interrupting the video to show the menus. A pretty nice feature. Since I didn't really need that I turned it off in the hopes that it let the video pass without hindering it. This only marginally improved the video quality. there were still weird sync... Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice Slim Line Receiver, June 28, 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase( What's this?)
This review is from: Marantz NR1603 Slim Line AV Receiver (Electronics)
This was a nice slim line unit by Marantz but I had to return it because it was interfering with my wireless network and it wasn't even hard wired. If you want a unit that doesn't have all the extra stuff you really don't need than go and get yourself a NAD, the best sounding receiver out there and very user friendly.

3.0 out of 5 stars Excellent receiver marred by half-baked firmware, June 20, 2011
This review is from: Marantz NR1602 AV Receiver (Electronics)
I purchased the NR1602 as a system upgrade when my old 720P business projector conked and needed to switch from a 720P DVI universe to a 1080P HDMI universe. As such, the NR1602 replaces a DVDO IScan HD+, an Outlaw 950 and a 200W/ch Rane commercial amp.

Size-wise it's awesome. Tiny little thing. How's it sound? Plenty good enough. I mix audio for a living and I haven't heard too many receiver/speaker combos currently for sale that aren't "plenty good enough" for most living rooms. In switching from 200W/channel to 50W/channel the biggest difference I notice is that I turn the volume up more. I can still make the system plenty loud enough to annoy my neighbors in my condo. This thing isn't going to power the Hard Rock Hotel but then, if your concern is oomph you aren't buying a compact Rx anyway, are you?

By my count, this Marantz is one of only ten receivers that are currently Airplay-enabled. Airplay works flawlessly on the Marantz: you fire up your... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Very pleased, August 13, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase( What's this?)
This review is from: Marantz NR1602 AV Receiver (Electronics)
I have had this for a few days and am very happy with the receiver.

FIRMWARE:
I was able to connect it to the network (through the Ethernet port on the back) and get a firmware update within 15 minutes.

AIRPLAY / DLNA:
AirPlay is working as advertised (put receiver and laptop on the same LAN, fire up iTunes, select receiver as speaker output). Then play whatever you want in iTunes and it goes seamlessly to the receiver.

I also easily hooked up the receiver via the network to my NAS device which has many GB of mp3s. The NAS and the receiver both support DLNA / UPnP and it was seamless.

INPUTS:
I have 5 devices connected:
Net Top running Windows 7 via HDMI
XBOX via component video and digital audio
DVD player via component video and digital audio
Wii via regular RCA red-white-yellow cables.
Mini-stereo in to RCA red-white audio (for iPods / mobiles - there is also a USB port on the... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars A great AVR with everything I need, January 7, 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase( What's this?)
This review is from: Marantz NR1602 AV Receiver (Electronics)
I'm writing this mostly because I was just on the Amazon page and was surprised by how few reviews there were. I'm not even sure what I'm going to write yet.

I initially had the NR1601 and enjoyed it. As soon as I got it I saw that the 1602 was coming out so I sold the 1601 and bought one of the first 1602's. The 2 amps are very similar, so if you like the first you'll like the second and as far as I can tell they sound the same. I like the remote on the 1601 better because it's lit and it's always dark when I watch a movie. The 1602 remote has some different buttons that I've never used. I think the 1601 had 2 optical inputs where the 02 has an optical and COAX. The 01 had a DOLBY Headphone mode where the 02 has a virtual mode and I have no idea what that means - I don't know if it's another name for Dolby or if it's a fake dolby or something else all together. but it also had DOBLY DTS-HD which I don't think the 1601 had and I like it a lot. Listening to a... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Solid Performance For The Price, January 2, 2009
By
Flatpicnut (Morgantown, WV) - See all my reviews

This review is from: Marantz SR5003 Audio Video Receiver (Electronics)
I purchased this AVR on Thanksgiving Day, when it had been offered by OneCall (via Amazon.com) for nearly 20% off list price (despite the fact that this unit seems to rarely be discounted on the internet). I waited to review it until I had a chance to set it up with a Panasonic Blu-Ray (BD55) that I received for Christmas (also purchased on Amazon.com). Now that I have had a chance to listen to it with the Blu-Ray as well as listening to it in 2-channel mode (music) I can report that I am very pleased with the sound quality and separation in both 2-channel and my 5.0 setup (no subwoofer is being used). The sound quality in 2-channel was very important to me, and for the price this AVR is a very reasonable choice. My only caution would be that the SR5003 is rated at 90 watts per channel, which is fine for my room size (about 15 x 15) , but may not be enough for larger rooms. Nonetheless, my aging ears (which suffer from a touch of tinnitus from too many concerts in my 20's) do not... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Marantz SR5003 Review, November 23, 2008
This review is from: Marantz SR5003 Audio Video Receiver (Electronics)
I previously had a McIntosh amplifier (tube) and preamplifier, then a 150 watt Luxman reveiver. The Luxman because of its age started popping in and out of one of the channels. (I am having it restored) I got the Marantz primarily for when I set up my 50" plasma for surround sound. Right now it's pushing two Klipasch Chorus II speakers. The sound is quite good although maybe not quite at the level of the Luxman for classical music which is what I listen most often (I am a trained musician). For AV purposes the Marantz is really well designed with a huge number of configurations. I also I have the XM satellite radio setup which was very easy to connect and make active. The sound is very clean and powerful. The remote is quite well designed and can be used as a universal unit.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great combination of value, features and performance, May 18, 2009

Amazon Verified Purchase( What's this?)
This review is from: Marantz SR5003 Audio Video Receiver (Electronics)
I bought this Marantz receiver on sale from OneCall, which I've purchased from before and had very good experiences. It's in a secondary system with a universal DVD/SACD player (connected via HDMI) and a recent addition of a Logitech Squeezebox, and also an external amp driving a biamped set of speakers. It replaced an analog 2 channel preamp because I decided to add a display and needed HDMI switching. I also needed something with the 12 volt DC trigger output to turn on the external amp, which not many receivers have. This is not a very common feature in this price range, and it took me quite a while to find a receiver under $1K which met that along with having a few other must have features. The fact that Marantz has a reputation for giving attention to refining the sound quality of their products helped.

I've been very happy with it from a feature standpoint as well as performance. The looks are pretty nice, too. The one operational nitpick I've had is that the menu... Read more
